A BRIEF BACKSTORY
We have been (like many, many, many of us), extremely disheartened at the reality we find ourselves in. Every day, hatred is (mis)directed at a new target. Anyone who falls into the "other" category is instantly maligned by people looking to place blame on anyone other than themselves. This happens so often that soon the unaffected may all live in a gilded tower with their name emblazoned upon it.
We live in a time when truth and fact are no longer taken at their word and where a call for common decency is considered a revolutionary act.
In thinking about what we can do to elicit positive change, we thought back to being young queer adults in the 90's and what we would have done then -- gather our friends, write out our truth, take it to a copier and pass out a homemade zine.
We're older now and married (a hard won right that we ourselves fought for, standing on the shoulders of generations of activists before us). We do not have the privilege of taking this universal human right for granted and we live in a time where we can't afford to take anyone's rights for granted. In that spirit, we came up with the idea: Esta Tierra, An American Zine. We all belong here; this is our land. We can never really own it, but we can and should be able to live on it and exist in peace.
Please join us by submitting your truth about what you're experiencing right now. About your hope for the future. About your love of this beautiful, if flawed, country of ours.
We cannot emphasize enough -- this only works with your participation. This is not the time for passivity. Go march. Go to your town halls. Learn about government. Support each other and channel your feelings into art.
We already have some mind-blowingly good submissions, but we would love more!
You have power.
You have a voice.
Please use it!
